  • I’ve been tracking this camera a couple months now and think it’s a great competitor for the 5D shooters.  Many Canon lovers I know believe they delayed a couple releases due to the D3 technology but now that Nikon has a mid-priced body with the pro’s specs (mostly), it’s time for Canon to really blow us away with something BIG.  Even my buddy with his two 5D bodies think the D3 rocks and after a party where it was so dark we were shooting 1/15 @ 1.8 @ ISO 25k he knew he’d never gotten some of those shots.

With all that said, I’m a Niknonian but believe they both rock and love cameras on both sides.  If the world was perfect it’d just be Canon or Nikon shooters with all those dealers giving up on passing the Olympus and Sony gear as “better then Nikon or Canon”.  C’mon guys, we know better then that right?!?  I know they’ve been quick to release some cool features but lets be REAL here, Nikon creates, Canon innovates!  It’s healthy for both sides but for a nice change of pace the Nikon guys can be proud to say they’re Nikon shooters.

  • I am so stoked about this. Hopefully my D2X won’t crap out on me until this comes out. I have 240,917 clicks on my D2X. I rented a D3 for a triathalon, and of course I had a wedding I got to use it on. I loved it, but with the money we have been spending lately, it’s nice to save 2K and have a full frame rocking camera. Hope all is well. Nothing new here, I think every Braves player has been on the DL, our bats suck, and we can’t win on the road. Here is to the trading deadline. See ya

  • @originart - I just cant wait to get my hands on one of these… I have always been a Nikon user since the 8008 days.. I did shoot with the Fuji S2 for  a while… Any ways I agree with what you said about the Olympus and the Sony… I thought Sony would have used the Nikon mount… Thats dumb to come out with there own lenses this late in the game… There were plenty of times I thought about changes to cannon, just couldnt do it… I have way too much glass afford that, including a 400 2.8… With all that siad I have to say I am a proud Nikon shooter… PEACE

  • The funny thing is that some people are calling this camera 3 years “late”.  I guess they mean as an affordable FF competition to the 5D, but the reality is this D700 makes the 5D look like a cheapo noob cam.  The D700 is going to compete with (and in many cases beat) the Canon 5D mk2.

Having said that, the Canon 5D mk2 is going to be KILLER, it will probably cost a little less than the Nikon yet offer equal or superior image quality.  Just like the 40D VS D300.  Canon skimps on a few pro features but delivers the goods, speed and image quality.

Having said that, I really feel no need for FX any time soon.  The D300 is just more than enough, and it’s going to approach $1500 used by the time the D700 gets here.  I’d rather have two D300′s than just one D700, in a heartbeat.  Or in my case, I’d rather have some more lenses and an SB900.

I’m only going to consider “adding” the D700 to my arsenal when Nikon comes out with some proper f/4 VR pro zooms and some new f/1.4 pro primes.  Without these, I feel NO inclination to “go FX”.

    Exciting times nonetheless,
    =Matt=

  • Well, more options means lower prices so I’d like to see Nikon do extraordinarily well and create awesome gear. It is only better for the industry. I started with Nikon but now use Canon because right now they seem to serve professionals better because they are first at everything almost. BUT, I will have no hesitation to moving back to Nikon if it works for my situation. Cameras are so good now (Nikon and Canon, the only limitations we have is our own knowledge and has nothing to do with equipment.
